Hygrophila pinnatifida is a distinctive live aquarium plant featuring narrow, serrated leaves that can shift from green toward red under stronger lighting. This tissue culture is clean of algae, duckweed and snails, making it ready for careful preparation and placement in a planted aquarium.
Its flexible growth habit suits midground and background layouts as well as hardscape displays. Grow it in substrate, tuck plantlets into rock crevices or attach them to rock or driftwood using a small dab of super glue gel.
Key Features
- Moderate growth and a mature range of approximately 6–16 inches tall and 4–8 inches wide make this stem plant useful for layered aquascapes.
- Medium-to-high lighting at 20–50+ PAR supports growth and can encourage red coloration. The stated CO requirement is low to medium, and the recommended skill level is medium.
- Newly submerged growth may experience older leaves melting while the plant develops underwater-adapted leaves. Plenty of light and nutrients can support this transition; stems may also be floated temporarily while more roots develop.
- Prune the top portion when the plant becomes too tall. Tops, side shoots and runners can be replanted for propagation, while trimming side growth can help maintain a compact appearance.
